National Service Framework for Older People – an update
The Department of Health has released a progress report on the changes
needed under the National Service Framework (NSF) for Older People.
The NSF, published two years ago, sets out guidelines that need to be
followed to promote the best possible NHS service for older people.
Continence services were covered in the NSF.
The NSF stated: ‘Incontinence is distressing for the individual, and
for their carers, and is the second most common reason for admission to
residential care. Continence services have not been readily available
to all those who need them.’ It also said that ‘integrated continence
services should be established’.
The progress report summarises the changes to the health service so
far, and discusses further improvements that still need to be made.
