Bed & Chair ProtectionThere is a wide range of covers and pads to protect bedding and furniture. There are covers for mattresses, pillows, blankets, duvets, sleeping bags and all sorts of cushions. Plastic or PVC is the cheapest and most common material used for covers. But plastic covers don’t last very long. Plastic becomes hard and then cracks and splits, especially if it is washed often. Plastic can be hot, sweaty and uncomfortable to lie on. So plastic products may be best used in the short term - for holidays and nights away from home for example. There are several newer fabrics which contain polyurethane and polyester. These last longer, they make less noise and are often more comfortable to use. But they are often more expensive that plastic products. Some materials claim to be anti-bacteriological – which should reduce the risk of smells. Others are described as ‘breathable’, which may lessen the problems of sweating. Always check the size of the mattress or cushions you want to protect. Mattress covers are available in all standard sizes and can be made to measure too. If you are a restless sleeper, choose a style which fits right round the mattress – it will be less likely it slip off. A cheaper PVC mattress cover may be enough if you only use it once in a while. For regular use it is worth buying a fabric that will last longer and be more comfortable. Some mattress covers also have a terry-towelling surface for added comfort. To minimise smells and make your bedding protection last longer, always sponge the covers with a dilute solution of mild detergent or disinfectant. If you are using an electric blanket, do check with the manufacturer that the mechanism is completely waterproof. You can also use absorbent pads to protect mattresses and cushions. Some are disposable, others can be washed and reused. If a bed or chair pad already has a waterproof backing you may not need any other protection. For extra security you may want to use cushion and mattress covers as well as an absorbent pad. It’s up to you to find what you are happy with.
