Body Worn Urinals

Incontact Product Information Sheet 2

Body-worn urinals may be worth considering if penile sheaths are not suitable or if disposal of single-use sheaths would be a problem.

They should be fitted by a specialist - a good fit is crucial for comfort and to avoid leakage. It is also important that you understand how to use the device. The specialist will check that you have sufficient use of your hands to use the urinal - or that you have a carer who can do it.

Normally two urinals are needed, as daily changes are necessary. Each urinal should last approximately six months and most are available on prescription through your GP.

Each urinal should be washed in warm soapy water, rinsed and dried thoroughly. Follow the manufacturers washing instructions, as each product is different.

Wash the genitalia in the morning and evening. Do not to use talcum powder or cream as these can irritate the skin and affect the material that the urinal is made from.

Some urinals are made of latex - a few people are allergic to this. If you do have any problems, see your doctor or nurse as soon as possible.

There are four main types of body worn urinals:

Drip urinals are the simplest - they are designed to contain a moderate amount of leakage. They come with a waist strap with a reservoir or drip bag, which fits over the penis. There is a tap to drain the reservoir - with some you can connect another drainage bag onto this so you don't have to empty it so often.

Diaphragm urinals have a flexible diaphragm held in place by straps. The penis passes through the diaphragm into the urinal.

Pubic pressure urinals are designed for use by men who find the sheath unsuitable. The urinal is held close to the body by waist and groin straps - this pressure allows the penis to protrude into the urinal.

Penis and scrotum urinals are designed to contain the whole genitalia - these can also be used by men with a retracted penis
