Catheters For Intermittent Self Catheterisation (ISC) A catheter is a thin tube. It can be used to drain urine from the bladder. Catheters are useful for people who cannot empty their bladders. There are two ways a catheter can be put into the bladder – through the tube that urine normally comes out of (the urethra) or through a specially made hole in the side of the abdomen. Some catheters stay in place all the time. These are called indwelling catheters. They need to be changed regularly and your doctor or nurse will advise you on this. Some catheters are only inserted at regular intervals, or when you feel the need to go to the toilet. Once the urine has drained out the catheter is removed. This is called intermittent self catheterisation or ISC. Most catheters for ISC are used once then thrown away. Some are designed to be cleaned and reused. This information sheet contains details of catheters for intermittent use only. Many people find it easy to self catheterise. You need to have good control of your hands because it can be a fiddle. And you should have reasonable eyesight so you can see what you are doing. Catheters are available in male and female lengths – they are slightly longer for men. There are three main types. Plain catheters are made of plastic and have to be used with a special lubricant before insertion. Coated catheters have a hydrophilic coating. The catheter is soaked in water for a minute before use. The water makes the coating become slippery so it is easy to insert. Pre-lubricated catheters are plain catheters which come packed with lubricant so they are ready to use. Before use, all catheters should be kept in a dry area, lying flat and straight. If the packaging is damaged do not use the catheter. It is very important to wash hands and genitalia before touching or inserting the catheter. Some intermittent catheters can be used more than once. These should be cleaned after each use with soap and water, dried with a clean tissue and kept in a sealed plastic bag or container.
