Disposable pads and pants
Disposable pads are a common way of managing bladder and bowel problems. There are many different shapes and sizes of pads and it is important that the correct type and size is used. Some are suitable for small leaks, others are useful for people who have more severe problems. There are three main types of pads. Some come with their own pants to hold them in position. Others need special pants to keep them in place. Pads without waterproof backing should be used with special waterproof pants. The pad is inserted into a pouch which holds it in place. There is generally a ‘stay dry’ fabric between the pad and your skin – this lets the urine go into the pad but should stop it feeling wet against your skin. This type of pad is used for light or moderate leaks of urine. Shaped pads with a waterproof backing can be held in place by special net underpants or pants with a special pouch in them. These pads generally have a ‘stay dry’ layer which goes next to the skin and a waterproof plastic backing to stop urine leaking out of the pad. These types of pads are also used for light to moderate leaks. All-in-one shaped pads are often more suitable for bigger leaks and also for faecal leakage. These pads are designed like children’s nappies, with adhesive tapes which fix at the sides to hold the pad in place. These pads usually offer good protection, provided they fit well. There is a waterproof backing material all around the pad which offers some protection against smells. All-in-one pads can be worn without underwear, but it is not advisable. After soiling a pad, get to a lavatory to wash and change the pad as soon as possible. Good hygiene is essential to prevent odour and avoid skin problems. Soiled pads or clothing should be put into an airtight container or sealed bag until they can be washed or disposed of.
