Many people with continence problems worry about the smell. Fresh urine should not smell strongly. If it does, it maybe because of infection - see a doctor or nurse to check this. Urine starts to smell if it is exposed to air, so keep wet clothes and sheets in a sealed bag or container until you can wash them. This should prevent unwanted smells. Good hygiene is essential to prevent smells and skin irritation. Wash well each day and - if possible - each time a pad is changed. When washing use PH balanced, fragrance free soap and rinse well. Pat dry with a soft towel and avoid rubbing the skin. A small hairdryer is a good way to dry yourself when at home. When out and about you can use moist alcohol and fragrance free tissues. You may like to use a simple barrier cream to protect your skin. Avoid talcum powder and scented washing products. If you find it difficult to wash yourself ask your nurse to arrange for help. If the skin becomes red or sore, check if the cause might be a pad or appliance. Ask for help from your nurse or doctor if the skin becomes broken or if pressure sores develop. Use pads, pants and appliances that you find comfortable and do not leak. You may have to try several different types before you choose. These products will help contain any leaks and protect your bedding and furniture. Any leaks or spills should be dealt with as soon as possible. Some people find that certain food or drink make them more prone to soreness. Speak to your doctor or nurse about cutting these out of your diet. With careful personal hygiene it is often possible to prevent soreness, even if you have bladder or bowel problems.
