Remembering Incontact in Your Will Why I should make a will? Some people have a subconscious fear of making a will. Tempting fate, they think. And they put it off as something that can be done at a later date. But do not be drawn into this way of thinking. There are many advantages of making a will and doing so without delay- not the least of which is your own peace of mind that your affairs have been put in order. What are the other advantages? By making a will, it is you who decides what happens to your money and possessions when you die. The future of your immediate family can be provided for and you can also make provision for your other relatives and friends as you yourself choose. On the other hand, if you don’t make a will, the law will determine who benefits - which may result in a totally different distribution than you would have wanted. In particular, the law does not provide for any benefit going to any partner of yours unless he/she is married to you. By making a will, you can pass down specific items of sentimental or real value to express gratitude for the kindness or friendship which you felt during your lifetime. In a will you can choose whom you wish to appoint as your executors. This choice is very important as they are the people responsible for administering your estate and for looking after your affairs after your death. If you do not leave a will, your nearest relatives will automatically act. In a will, you can appoint guardians to look after your children. You can specify any wishes that you may have for your funeral. Making a will is a convenient way of giving to charities after you have made provision for your family. Charitable gifts made in this way will be deducted from the value of your estate for tax purposes so reducing the amount on which any liability to inheritance tax is calculated. Now you’ve seen some of the advantages of making a will, how you go about preparing one? You could draw it up by yourself (you may well have seen a Will Form, which you fill in yourself, on sale at the stationers). You could buy one but be warned! Not consulting a professional (e.g. a solicitor) in the preparation of what amounts to a complex legal document may be a false economy. Wills depend for their validity on careful drafting and on signature in a specific way. Therefore, we seriously advise you to think twice before taking shortcuts, especially if you have substantial assets. From an article which first appeared in the Incontact Magazine Spring 2001. Volunteering By volunteering, you can help make a real difference to people's lives. All volunteers have to pass through a simple application process.
